Vio wakes up at the crack of dawn with a yawn, rushing out of his room to put on a fresh set of clothes.

“I must have read the book until morning,” says Vio, gradually descending the stairs to the entrance hall. “Seems like today will be a good day since no one has come to bother me.”

Last evening, a new idea regarding the intricacies of spirit magic struck him. He stayed up all night reading for supplementary information.

Spirit magic is a curious thing. There are basic magic circles, and a single addition to the structural formula can result in a tremendous change. Not to mention, the changes themselves are visible to anyone. It’s like science without the chemicals.

The magic that creates flying butterflies of light is based on magic that summons light.  First, it brings forth small lights that drift in the air. Then comes the phenomenon where these glistening orbs morph into butterflies.

In that same regard, Vio devised many patterns for magic circles last night. Some produce a large light, others small, and some create many lights at once. All of it peaks his interest.

(How should I tweak the formula to change the light’s color?)

Once he starts contemplating, he becomes so invested in finding the solution that he loses track of time, often going without sleep.

Once he reaches the bottom of the stairs, Vio catches the figure of Ed, the gardener, through the large window of the foyer. He squats as he works.

Vio opens the window, letting the clear and crisp morning air indoor.

“Good morning, Ed. Have you already started working?”

“Good morning young master.” Ed rises from his crouch without hesitation, removing the straw hat from his head and tying its straps around his top. Then he bows, smiling softly.

“I was concerned about the section I didn’t finish yesterday so I woke up early… Was I being too loud?”

“No. I was still reading a while ago.”

The flowerbed Ed is tending has shrubs planted in the center, with different flowers arranged according to a color gradient. Only one third remains to be filled out.

“I understand the feeling, but please take a break Ed,” says Vio.

“Yes, I know.  I’ll just finish this last part for now.”

“Alright then. It was rude of me to disturb you.”

“Nothing of the sort! How is the Lord of the manor any disturbance?” Ed bows once more and returns to his work.

Vio attempts to close the window, tearing his gaze from the charming view of the garden.

“Beautiful.”

He’ll definitely feel better if he takes a stroll out there. His fingertips trail along glass, tracing out flowers in the distance.

(Should I? A single step and I’d be outside. Yes, I’ll just go for a little while.)

Vio turns to sneak out the window. But the hand clutching the window frame shakes contrary to his intention to go outside. Gritting his teeth, he extends his leg slightly through the opening before pulling it back and stepping  back on the foyer’s floor. And he lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.

“As expected, it is useless…”

He feels miserable. As he reaches out the window again, a voice sounds out from behind.

“Lord Violant? Good morning. It’s still very early, isn’t it?”

“Mr. Legion…”

“Please call me Legi.”

He breaks into a knight’s salute, a refreshing smile with a hand placed over his chest. Vio slides the window shut with a click.

“They’re beautiful. Even as an outsider, I can tell the flowerbed is spectacular,” says Legion. “I’m fond of it.”

Ignoring Legion’s words of praise, Vio makes for his laboratory.

“Lord Violant?”

But he continues to ignore him.

(Damn it! My mood keeps tanking because of him!)

He can’t afford to let anyone see him right now. Currently, Vio is pale as a ghost. His heart thrashes against his chest and he’s kicking up a cold sweat.

(This foolish son of mine! To be betrayed by a vassal, what kind of master are you? Pathetic!)

The voice of his father thunders through Vio’s head and he screws his eyes tight.

  2. Thanks for sharing this story. I’ll add it to my reading list. I find the interaction between the 2 adorable. The MC is very charming (flowers, butterflies & vulnerability, sigh,…). The ML is stubborn without being overbearing & has a sunny disposition. Hopefully, it will make for a nice story.
